DRUG:

Hydroxocobalamin (hye-DROX-oh-koe-BAL-a-min)

USE:

Intramuscular Injection:For the treatment of pernicious anemia; dietary deficiency of vitamin B 12 occurring in strict vegetarians and in their breast-fed infants; malabsorption of vitamin B 12 resulting from structural or functional damage to the stomach or to the ileum; inadequate secretion of intrinsic factor; competition for vitamin B 12 by intestinal parasites or bacteria; inadequate utilization of vitamin B 12 . For use in the Schilling test. Intravenously:

Treatment of known or suspected cyanide poisoning.

BEFORE USING:

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.

DIRECTIONS:

This medicine is sometimes used at home as an injection. Before using this medicine, a health care professional will provide detailed instructions for appropriate use of this medicine. Ask any questions that you may have about this medicine or giving injections. STORE THIS MEDICINE as directed on the prescription label. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

CAUTIONS:

DO NOT TAKE large doses of vitamins (megadoses or megavitamin therapy) unless directed to by your doctor. Do not stop using this medicine without first checking with your doctor. It is important that you keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while you are using this medicine. Before yur begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience pain or redness at the injection site, diarrhea, itching, rash, or hives. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience leg pain, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, swelling, or flushing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. If your skin turns red after receiving this medication, avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds) Hydroxocobalamin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:

Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking.

IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH:

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Do not share this medication with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use this medicne for other health conditions. Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when it is full.
