What Is Mebendazole? 

Mebendazole is a prescription antiparasitic medication, also known as an anthelmintic, that targets certain parasitic worms. 

Mebendazole interferes with the formation of the worms’ microtubules, which are structures they need to function and survive. It also blocks their ability to use glucose. Without this energy source, the worms become depleted, die, and are eliminated from the body.² 

Mebendazole is FDA-approved to treat intestinal infections caused by: 

  • Pinworms 
  • Roundworms 
  • Whipworms 
  • Some types of hookworms 

In selected cases, healthcare providers may also use mebendazole to treat other parasitic infections, including trichinellosis, visceral toxocariasis, and echinococcosis². 

Mebendazole does not treat every parasite. It primarily targets certain worms and is not a universal treatment for protozoal infections or unexplained digestive symptoms.
